We use Newtonian formalism to motivate the form of Friedmann equations that describe the expansion of the universe in the standard cosmological model. We use the same formalism to study the evolution of density perturbations in the universe. We show that a simple model like spherical collapse can be used to estimate the characteristics of halos of galaxies and clusters of galaxiesen_US
