Flames have been a topic of interest for a long time and only recently, with the invention of new and high precision instruments have they been properly studied. In this thesis, we use one such high precision technique called op- tical interferometry using lasers to investigate the flames more deeply. The main area of study was the effect of flame on the phase change and optical depth of the medium, which gives more interesting information about the refractive index and temperature gradient inside the flame. In the scope of this thesis, we also studied the fast process of flickering and characterized it on the basis its frequency for visibly stable and unstable flames.en_US
